UNESCO is the lead UN Agency for promoting freedom of expression and safety of journalists as part of its mandate to “promote the free flow of ideas by word and image”.

Free Press Unlimited

Free Press Unlimited supports media workers at risk around the world, including individual journalists and media outlets in exile. Its Reporters Respond programme provides emergency and legal support, and psychosocial support is part of all the help it gives.

    A global fund provides non-structural support to media workers, including emergency funds, grants for projects, relocation funds and equipment replacement. Free Press Unlimited has also given core support to media in exile through its projects – Radio Dabanga, for example, was set up with Free Press Unlimited and is now independent.

    Lawyers and legal advice, depending on availability, as well as trial monitoring and advocacy on legislation and public policy.

    Online courses through Totem, an online learning resource. The need for other training is assessed for each project.

    Psychosocial support is a key part of all the support Free Press Unlimited provides.

    Support varies from project to project. Free Press Unlimited has helped journalists to establish themselves in new countries, to relocate, and to join media outlets in their new country.

Priorities

No countries are prioritised: the global fund covers Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa. Risk is assessed case by case.
