Uzbekistan’s results have to be seen in the context of a survey that reflects the nation’s media, with about 70% of respondents working in state media and about 30% in private media. Although state media journalists were cautious to commit to answers, an accurate picture emerges. Despite low pay, most Uzbek journalists work fulltime and don’t fear for their jobs, shown in Uzbekistan’s high ranking in terms of financial safety. They also see no need to change their workplace. On the other hand, the low placing in digital safety rests on the fact that almost half of the journalists have experienced or experience surveillance, and a third hateful or demeaning speech. There is little protection on offer since the state is unlikely to protect those who are critical of the state. The factors of surveillance and stalking (understood as a form of surveillance) also affect physical and psychological safety, where Uzbekistan sits in the lower middle of the countries’ list, indicating the pressures of working in an environment of limited media freedom.
