In the United States, journalists rate relatively high on financial and digital safety compared with the world sample. They tend to score more in the middle of the world’s journalists on psychological, physical and overall safety measures. In terms of overall safety experiences, the most concerning issue for U.S. journalists was the Covid epidemic (17% had experienced this challenge.). Only three other safety experiences were indicated by more than 5% of U.S. journalists: demeaning and hateful speech, questioning of their personal morality, and public discrediting. Physical dangers like abduction, attacks, and stalking were extremely uncommon. Around 80% of U.S. journalists reported strong support from their colleagues and their news organizations. 60% of the journalists worry about their work being hacked or blocked, and 48% of them worry about surveillance. Nearly half of U.S. journalists report having received safety training. Their awareness of possible threats to their safety were also reflected in some of the avoidance activities they reported having engaged in: changing personal routines (27%), spending little time in dangerous areas (26%), or changing their phone numbers (12%).
